There’s been a couple of canceled Half-Life VR prototypes, a Minecraft lookalike A.R.T.I., a completely original RPG, and even an over-complicated – and over-priced – Vader VR headset among other projects. Apart from these two gaming pillars, Valve has shelved several other video games. Unfortunately, the unfinished state of the Source 2 engine is also to blame for the game's demise. The game was eventually canceled simply because the Source 2 engine was still unfinished.Īs for Left 4 Dead 3's cancellation, the game was meant to be open-world and hundreds of zombies onscreen at a time. These randomized levels were supposed to give players a consistently fresh experience, but the prototype was never finished.
As reported by IGN, Half-Life 3 was prototyped between 20, drawing inspiration from the Left 4 Dead series to make a more replayable story offering procedurally generated routes and enemy layouts. While Half-Life: Alyx isn't a sequel, it does draw some inspiration from Marc Laidlaw’s “Epistle 3” plot, which is strongly believed to be the original plot of the canceled Half-Life 2: Episode 3. However, the VR game has resurrected the rumors, once again giving fans new hopes that Valve is ready to return to its most iconic franchise. Instead, Valve has waited for years to release something as revolutionary as Half-Life 2 once was: Half-Life: Alyx. Half-Life 3's existence has been long-rumored, speculated on, and even leaked since the cliffhanger ending of Half-Life 2: Episode 2, but none of the claims have ever led to an official announcement or confirmation of its cancellation. It appears that fans’ jokes about the company abandoning game development in favor of resting on Steam’s laurels have been true all along, but the success of Half-Life: Alyx might change that.
Over the years, Valve canceled almost a dozen various promising video games, including long-awaited sequels Half-Life 3 and Left 4 Dead 3.
